What “What seems to help” shows you

It compares your average frustration on days you exercised or meditated with the days you didn’t. In the example here, frustration averaged 3.6 on days with a meditation and 5.0 on the others.

Kettle shows the two numbers side by side. It doesn’t say meditation is the reason, because a pattern in your own entries can’t tell you what caused it.

Shown with the app’s sample data.

Kettle’s What seems to help card. On days you exercised, frustration averaged 2.3, other days 5.9. On days you meditated, frustration averaged 3.6, other days 5.0.

Why I priced it this way

I built Kettle because I’ve struggled with my own anger for most of my life. I want it to be a business so I can spend more time on it and help more people, but making money isn’t the main point.

The journal is the part that does the work, so the journal is free. If you pay for Plus, at any of the three prices, you’re supporting the app. It pays for support and updates, and it helps keep Kettle free for people who can’t afford it. If money is tight, take the free option. That’s what it’s there for.

Questions

Pricing questions

How does billing work?

  • Kettle Plus is billed once a year until you cancel. You can cancel anytime on your iPhone, in Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions.
  • Apple handles the payment and shows the price in your local currency, so it may differ outside the United States.
  • There’s no monthly plan, no lifetime price, no discount codes and no free trial. The journal is already free, and so is Plus if you need it to be.
  • A paid subscription follows your Apple Account. The “I can’t pay right now” unlock is stored on your phone, so if you reinstall Kettle you’ll choose again.

When does the app ask me to choose?

Once, the first time an insight is ready for you, which is usually in your second week. After that it only comes up if you open it yourself. If you choose “I can’t pay right now”, nothing in the app marks you out and it won’t ask again.

What happens to entries older than 30 days on the free plan?

They stay on your phone. The journal log shows your last 30 days, and older entries still count toward your streaks and your chart.

Say you’ve journaled for 45 days. On the free plan the log shows the latest 30. The other 15 are still on your phone, and if you turn Plus on, all 45 open again.

What happens if I stop paying for Kettle Plus?

The Plus features lock again and everything else carries on. Nothing you’ve written is deleted. Your older entries stay on your phone, and they open again if you turn Plus back on.

Does paying for Plus change my privacy?

No. Plus works the same way as the free journal. There’s no account, your entries stay on your phone, dictation happens on the phone, and notifications never show what you wrote. Apple takes the payment, so your card details never reach me. The privacy policy has the detail.

When can I get Kettle?

Kettle is for iPhone only, and it isn’t on the App Store yet. There’s no Android app, no web app and no waiting list to join. Until it’s out, the guides and the printable worksheets are free to use, with no sign-up.
