What Kettle is

What is Kettle?

Kettle is an iPhone app for keeping a daily anger journal. You answer five questions a day, which takes about three minutes, and over time the app charts your frustration and stress so you can see your own patterns. It isn’t on the App Store yet.

Is this the Kettle fitness app or the Kettle food ordering app?

No. The Kettle at kettlejournal.com is an anger journal. It has no connection to other apps that share the name, such as Kettle: AI Fitness Coach or The Kettle To Go.

Who makes Kettle?

I do. I’m Andrew Askins. I made Kettle because I’ve struggled with my anger for most of my life, and it has affected my relationships at home and at work. I’m not a clinician. More about me and why Kettle exists.

Is Kettle therapy?

No. Kettle is a journal, not a therapist. It doesn’t diagnose anything and it isn’t treatment. It also doesn’t use AI, so nothing reads or analyses what you write.

Devices and launch

Does Kettle work on Android, iPad or the web?

No. Kettle is for iPhone only and needs iOS 18 or later. There’s no Android app, no iPad version and no web app, and the app is in English only.

When will Kettle be on the App Store?

It isn’t there yet, and I don’t have a date to give you. There’s no waiting list to join. Until it’s out, the guides and printable worksheets on this site are free to use.

How the daily journal works

What are the five questions?

  1. What did I get frustrated about today?
  2. How frustrated did I get, from 0 to 10?
  3. What else was going on?
  4. What about the circumstances upset or frustrated me?
  5. How stressed am I in general today, from 0 to 10?

In the app’s sample journal, one entry reads: “A client moved a deadline up by a week with no warning”, a 6 for frustration, “Slept badly. Skipped lunch.”, “It felt like my time didn’t matter to them”, and a 5 for stress. How it works walks through each question.

How long does an entry take?

About three minutes. You can type your answers or tap the mic and talk. Dictation runs on your iPhone, so your voice isn’t sent anywhere.

What if nothing frustrated me today?

Tap “Nothing frustrated me today”. Kettle records a 0, skips to the stress question, and your streak carries on.

What happens if I miss a day?

Your streak starts again and your entries stay where they are. Kettle won’t chase you about it. If streaks make you feel worse, you can turn them off in Settings.

Can I edit an entry after I save it?

No. There’s one entry per day, and once it’s saved it stays as you wrote it.

What do the charts show, and what is “What seems to help”?

Progress shows your streaks, a chart of your frustration and stress over the last 14 days, and a grid of this week’s journal entries, meditations and workouts.

“What seems to help” compares your average frustration on days you exercised or meditated with the days you didn’t. It’s part of Kettle Plus. It shows a pattern in your own entries and proves nothing about cause.

What are the cool-down habits?

A meditation timer with a background sound and an interval bell, and a simple workout log. Both are optional, and you can turn either one off in Settings.

How many notifications does Kettle send?

None unless you ask for them. If you turn on the journal reminder, it arrives once a day at most and skips days you’ve already written. Meditation and exercise have separate reminders that stay off unless you turn them on.

Where your journal lives

Do I need an account?

No. There’s no account and no sign-in.

Where is my journal stored?

On your iPhone and nowhere else. Kettle has no server, so I can’t see your entries. The privacy policy covers the detail.

What happens to my entries if I lose or replace my phone?

Kettle has no sync and no backup of its own. Its data is included in your iPhone’s own backup, like other apps’ data, so restoring a new phone from that backup is how your journal comes with you. If a phone is lost and there’s no backup, the journal is gone and I can’t recover it.

Can someone see my entries in a notification or a widget?

No. Notifications and widgets never show what you wrote. You can also lock the app with Face ID.

Pricing

Is Kettle free?

The journal is free for good: all five questions, voice or text, reminders, streaks, widgets, Face ID lock, the 14-day chart, the meditation timer and the workout log.

What does Kettle Plus add, and what does it cost?

Kettle Plus adds:

  • “What seems to help” insights
  • your journal history beyond the last 30 days
  • the Stream and Wind sounds
  • interval bells every 1 and every 5 minutes
  • the meditation timer on your Lock Screen

Plus is one yearly subscription at $14.99, $24.99 or $49.99, and every price unlocks the same Plus. There’s no monthly plan, lifetime price or free trial. See pricing.

What if I can’t afford Kettle Plus?

Choose “I can’t pay right now” in the app. You get the same Plus, and nobody asks you to explain. Your older entries are never deleted either way.

When a journal isn’t enough

What should I do if my anger is hurting me or the people around me?

Talk to a professional. A journal can help you notice patterns, but it can’t replace a doctor or a therapist. The Get help page lists where to start. If you or someone else is in danger right now, call your local emergency number.

Can I use the worksheets without the app?

Yes. The worksheets are free to print, with no sign-up, and they work on their own. The daily anger log is the closest thing to Kettle on paper.
